I heard from two friends this past week. One hovers on the brink of a life defining decision. The other has made hers. The first weighs carefully the pros and cons, hesitant to fully embrace what she knows deep down she must do. Having committed, the other shares with gusto and resolve her first strides into its unfolding.
Do you see yourself in either of my friends? Or perhaps both? I do for myself. Once again, the words of John O’Donohue touch my heart for such moments. Perhaps they will provide some helpful perspectives for you as well. Which of his lines below speak most closely to your current situation?
For the Time of Necessary Decisions
The mind of time is hard to read.
We can never predict what it will bring
Nor even from all that is already gone
Can we say what form it finally takes;
For time gathers its moments secretly.
Often we only know it’s time to change
When a force has built inside the heart
That leaves us uneasy as we are.
Perhaps the work we do has lost its soul
Or the love where we once belonged
Calls nothing alive in us anymore.
We drift through this gray, increasing nowhere
Until we stand before a threshold we know
We have to cross to come alive once more.
May we have the courage to take the step
Into the unknown that beckons us;
Trust that a richer life awaits us there,
That we will lose nothing
But what has already died;
Feel the deeper knowing in us sure
Of all that is about to be born beyond
The pale frames where we stayed confined,
Not realizing how such vacant endurance
Was bleaching our soul’s desire.
So many mouths to feed and bills to pay,
hardly a moment in time
to give a thought,
to what intention The Divine.
Thanks, Glenn. Perhaps the intention of the divine for each of our lives is linked to the soul of our work and the love where we belong. And maybe our search for each at each stage of our life opens us more in our vulnerability and brings us closer to the divine.
I do see myself, Bob, perhaps in both. As painful as it is to let go of what I Know to be true, my identity, my passions, my gusto… it is inviting to know that just beyond the threshold lies waiting a new, quieter, deeper reality of a new truth and a new me. I cast away my hesitation and reach out to the hand which has been extended to me. Knowing that once the threshold is crossed there is no turning back.

Thanks for sharing, Lauren. I love your use of the word “threshold.” So true and powerful as both a barrier and a doorway. I also appreciate the image of a waiting hand extended to each of us. Continue to journey well, my friend, extending the gifts of your heart and soul.
Thanks for reminding me that we cannot fear time. Time is a concept we create in our own hearts. I think J.O. is saying listen to your Present gut instead, Time’s close cousin. Reading Time’s tea leaves is futile, we just have to trust in ourselves (Time doesn’t care!) because our actions are all we have in the end. That is our legacy.
So I love the first line,
/The mind of time is hard to read./
It reminds me that the Present is what matters, (how’s that for some irony?) the here and right now is what is truly important, (cliche, I know) and since Time waits for no one, it’s how I try to live my life, especially when life’s mess deals out illness, divorce, or any difficult challenge. Time doesn’t care, I’m just a spec of stardust among a million specs. I can only try to do my best and remember to love myself, my family and friends along the way.
Dear speck of stardust Bonnie! – love your thoughts and reflections. Thanks for sharing them with me and others. Being present is certainly one of life’s biggest challenges, amplified by our many experiences of time. Your perspective that time is something we create in our hearts bears much consideration. I’m grateful for that nugget and your participation in this conversation. Blessings…
